Futurekids announces HELP Team Consortium Receives Prestigious EdNet
2007 Award for Work in Gulf Coast Hurricane Areas
The Hurricane Education Leadership Program (HELP Team) was named the
recipient of the EdNet 2007 Rookie of the Year Award at the annual EdNet
conference in Chicago on Sept. 11. The annual award program recognizes
businesses and non-profit organizations that have made important
contributions to the education community.
The non-profit HELP Team is a consortium of education organizations,
foundations and technology-focused companies who came together two years ago
to respond to the Hurricane Rita and Katrina disasters.
The HELP team is responsible for support, consulting and providing
educational technology-related resources at no, or minimal cost to schools
that were damaged or destroyed and to students who have been displaced as a
result of the hurricane.
Terry Smithson, manager of the HELP Team Program and Education Program
Manager with Intel Corporation, was honored with the award.
“This is a complete team effort,” Smithson commented. “Everyone involved has
been a terrific help. We’re well on our way to building better learning
environments, but there’s still a lot of work to be done. We’re going to
continue to function as a group until our job is done, which could take many
more years.”
Dzana Homan, CEO of Futurekids, was honored that the team was selected.
“We’re committed to making a difference and having a real impact in the
schools that were hit so hard. We want to go beyond rebuilding. We want to
give teachers and their students’ real 21st century technology skills. We’re
in it for the long haul.”
